If you’re adding print on demand Christmas ornaments to your shop this year, the material you pick decides most of your margin before the design does. We price 16 ornaments across four suppliers, and the cheapest wood ornament costs $2.98 while the cheapest ceramic costs $6.15 — a $3.17 gap on a product that usually sells for under $20.

Quick verdict

For a broad Etsy or Shopify ornament line, start with ceramic at Printful for $6.15. Two suppliers price it, so you have a fallback, and it is the shape buyers picture when they search “personalized ornament”, and it leaves room for a $16–$20 retail price.

Use wood at CustomCat for $2.98 if you’re selling on price or in bundles, and acrylic at ShineOn for $7.50 when the design is a photo or needs a cut shape like a paw or a tree.

Ceramic: the default, and the only real price competition

The ceramic ornament is carried by two of the suppliers we verify:

SupplierCeramic ornamentDifference
Printful$6.15
Teelaunch$8.25+$2.10 (34% more)

Printful’s price is the US market price, which is what most Christmas ornament buyers will pay in. On 200 orders over the season, the $2.10 gap is $420 you keep.

One print-quality note that applies to every supplier: ceramic ornaments are never completely flat, so fine lines and small text can soften slightly at the edges. Gooten says this directly in its own product notes. Keep names and dates at a size someone could read from across a room, and avoid hairline script fonts.

ShineOn sells a ceramic heart at $9.50. That is $3.35 more than Printful’s round ceramic, so only choose it when a heart shape is the actual product idea, for example a memorial or a “first Christmas married” design.

Wood: cheapest by a wide margin

CustomCat’s wood ornament at $2.98 is the cheapest ornament we price, and cheaper than most mugs and tote bags in the directory.

Printful prices its wooden ornament at $8.37 (US price, verified September 17, 2026). That is $5.39 more, or 2.8 times CustomCat’s price, for the same material. Few categories in print on demand have a spread this wide, so check where you print wood before you price the listing.

Wood works best for rustic, farmhouse and minimalist designs, where a natural grain behind the print suits the look. It is a poor fit for full-color photos, because the wood tone shows through the lighter parts of the image.

It is also the ornament that makes bundles work. Three wood ornaments cost you $8.94, less than one acrylic bulb.

Acrylic: photos and custom shapes

ShineOn prices its flat acrylic ornaments at the same $7.50 regardless of shape:

ShineOn acrylic ornamentPrice
Circle$7.50
Star$7.50
Tree$7.50
Paw$7.50
Heart plaque ornament$7.50
Bulb$12.00
Plaque ornament$12.00

Acrylic is the best choice for photo ornaments like pets, babies and family portraits. It takes full color well, it doesn’t shatter in the post like ceramic can, and the cut shapes make a product that looks distinct from a plain round ornament.

The paw shape is the one to look at first. Pet memorial and “dog’s first Christmas” ornaments are a year-round-adjacent niche, and ShineOn charges nothing extra for the shape.

Skip the bulb at $12.00 unless you’ve tested demand. It costs $4.50 more than the flat shapes, and buyers searching for a bulb ornament can usually find glass ones in stores.

High-gloss and the stocking

ShineOn’s high-gloss heart, oval and star all cost $8.00. They sit between acrylic and ceramic heart on price and suit designs that should look polished rather than hand-made.

The giant holiday stocking at $14.27 is a different product: a personalized stocking, not a tree ornament. Price it separately, somewhere around $30–$35, not alongside your ornaments.

What you actually keep at $18

Personalized ornaments on Etsy mostly list between $15 and $25. At an $18 listing price, Etsy’s fees come to about $2.16 (6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 processing, $0.20 listing). Before shipping, that leaves:

OrnamentCostYou keep at $18
Wood (CustomCat)$2.98$12.86
Ceramic (Printful)$6.15$9.69
Acrylic flat shape (ShineOn)$7.50$8.34
High-gloss (ShineOn)$8.00$7.84
Ceramic (Teelaunch)$8.25$7.59
Ceramic heart (ShineOn)$9.50$6.34
Acrylic bulb (ShineOn)$12.00$3.84

Ornaments are light, but shipping is still a big share of the cost on a small order. Check whether your supplier charges less for extra items in the same order. Ornament buyers often order several at once, one per family member, and that pricing makes or breaks bundles. Run your own numbers in the profit calculator.

Timing: why September matters

Ornaments have a shorter season than almost anything else in print on demand. Searches start climbing in October and fall off right after the last shipping cutoff in December. Three things follow from that:

  1. List now. A listing published in late November competes against listings that have been collecting views and reviews since October.
  2. Order samples in October. You want photos of the real product, and you want to see how your small text prints on ceramic before 200 customers do.
  3. Plan for the earliest cutoff. Printful’s holiday deadline guide points out that an order mixing product categories has to meet the earliest category’s deadline. If you sell an ornament and a sweatshirt as a set, the slower product decides the date. Put each supplier’s cutoff in your shop announcement the week they publish it.

And one easy thing to miss: if your designs include “2026”, schedule a reminder to edit or deactivate them on December 26.

Coverage is thin, so have a backup

Only the ceramic round ornament and the wood ornament have more than one supplier in our data. Every ShineOn shape has just one. So if that supplier goes out of stock in the second week of December, there’s no quick switch.

If ornaments are a major part of your Q4, set up the same design at a second supplier before November, even if it costs more. A ceramic listing that can be moved from Printful to Teelaunch costs you $2.10 per order in the worst case. A listing with nowhere to go costs you the sale.

Bottom line

Ceramic at Printful ($6.15) is the safest default, wood at CustomCat ($2.98) has the best margin, and ShineOn’s $7.50 acrylic shapes are the pick for photo and pet ornaments. Whatever you choose, list it in September or October, not after Thanksgiving.
