Gildan vs Bella Canvas: The Gap Isn't What You Think

Almost every Gildan vs Bella Canvas comparison tells you the same thing: Bella costs about 20–30% more. That figure is roughly right — for t-shirts. It is badly wrong for everything else, and the difference is where sellers quietly lose money.

The tee comparison everyone quotes is the narrowest gap in the entire catalogue. On fleece, Bella is not 20% more expensive. It is 48% to 82% more expensive.

Quick verdict

Pick Gildan if fleece is a meaningful part of your catalogue, or if you sell at price points under about $25. The Gildan 18000 sweatshirt at $11.50 is the single best margin item either brand makes, and nine suppliers carry it.

Pick Bella Canvas if you sell tees almost exclusively and your buyers care about fit. On a t-shirt, $1.37 is a rounding error against a $22 sell price — and you get a genuinely better garment for it.

The mistake is picking a brand rather than picking per category. Nothing stops you printing Bella tees and Gildan fleece, and on a mixed catalogue that is usually the right answer.

Why the tee gap is so small

The Gildan 5000 is a 5.3 oz classic-fit tee, pre-shrunk, boxy through the body. The Bella Canvas 3001 is 4.2 oz, side-seamed, retail fit, in Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton.

Those are meaningfully different shirts, and $1.37 is not much to pay for the difference. At a $22 sell price it is 6% of revenue. If your buyers are fashion-leaning — apparel brands, band merch, anything where the garment is part of the product rather than a substrate for a joke — Bella is worth it and the maths barely notices.

This is also the fairest fight in either catalogue. Nine suppliers price the 3001 and seven price the 5000, so both numbers are competitive floors rather than a single supplier’s quirk.

Why the fleece gap is so large

Fleece is where brand choice stops being a preference and starts being a P&L line.

A Gildan 18500 hoodie starts at $13.99, from CustomCat, with eight suppliers carrying it. The closest Bella hoodie, the 3512, starts at $20.65 across three suppliers. That is $6.66 a unit before you have printed anything.

Sweatshirts are worse. The Gildan 18000 is $11.50 against the Bella 7503 at $20.94 — $9.44 a unit, or 82%. On a hundred units that is $944 of margin, on a garment most buyers cannot identify by brand once it has your design on it.

Two things drive this. Gildan’s fleece is manufactured at enormous scale and is the default hoodie for nearly every supplier, so competition holds the floor down. Bella’s fleece is a much smaller line carried by fewer suppliers, and thin supplier coverage means no price pressure. You are paying for the softer handfeel and for scarcity at the same time.

Where each brand actually wins

Gildan wins on catalogue depth at the bottom. Its four cheapest tees — the 5000 at $6.00, the 64000 at $6.65, the 5000L at $7.15 and the 8000 at $7.24 — all undercut Bella’s cheapest blank. If you are running $15–20 price points, that spread is your entire margin.

Bella wins on range. We hold verified prices for 36 Bella models against 24 Gildan ones. Bella covers tanks, V-necks, women’s cuts, tri-blends and crops that Gildan simply does not make in a POD-available form. If your catalogue needs a women’s flowy tank or a tri-blend, Gildan has no answer and the comparison ends there.

Bella wins on DTG consistency. This is the one claim in the standard comparison we would not argue with. Airlume combed cotton has a smoother print surface, and it shows on dark garments and on gradients.

The counterintuitive part is what happens at the top. Across every model we price, Gildan’s median is $14.99 and Bella’s is $15.40 — 41 cents apart. The “premium brand” framing only holds at the entry tier. Once you are past the budget tees, the two brands cost almost exactly the same, because Gildan’s upper range (SF500 fleece, the 18600 zip hoodie) is priced like anyone else’s.

Mixing brands costs you nothing here

The obvious objection to “decide per category” is fulfilment. If your tees come from one supplier and your hoodies from another, a customer ordering both pays two shipping charges, and that usually wipes out the saving.

The supplier matters more than the brand

On a Gildan 5000 the spread across suppliers runs $6.00 to $9.59. That is a $3.59 range on a single blank — more than double the entire Gildan-to-Bella tee gap.

Put plainly: choosing the wrong supplier for a Gildan tee costs you more than choosing Bella over Gildan. The 20–30% figure everyone repeats is a t-shirt number that got generalised to a whole brand. On tees it is close to right and Bella is usually worth it. On fleece the real gap is 48–82%, and Gildan wins on margin by a distance that no handfeel argument survives.
